Charlotte Beaudry: Pussy Bow

Charlotte Beaudry's artistic practice focuses on painting and drawing, although she also produces videos, performances or sculptures.
Her work above all questions the rapports between femininity and its representation, comparing intimate experience to societal or media contexts.
A lengthy period devoted to the figure and the physicality of the adolescent is today succeeded by an iconography that extends to objects or female attributes (jewellery, adornments, accessories) whose metaphorical or symbolic potential is felt by the artist.
Between smaller works — suited to fine details — and larger canvases revealing surprising changes of scale, Charlotte Beaudry stimulates the eye of the beholder through a journey of contrasts consisting of some thirty works, exalting both the materiality of the painting and the insidious nature of its imagery.
Giving its title to the exhibition, the recent series "Pussy Bow" presents huge colourful bows that literally explode on the canvas.
This cryptic term, denoting a piece of knotted fabric on the neck of a blouse, may, however, prove equivocal. The artist seems to have fun by enhancing her huge bows with a manifest ambiguity.
Born in Huy (1968), Charlotte Beaudry lives and work in Brussels.

La pratique artistique de Charlotte Beaudry s'articule autour de la peinture et du dessin, bien qu'elle réalise par ailleurs des vidéos, des performances ou des sculptures.
Son travail interroge avant tout les rapports entre la féminité et sa représentation, confrontant l'expérience intime à des contextes sociétaux ou médiatiques.
À une large période consacrée à la figure et à la corporalité de l'adolescente succède aujourd'hui une iconographie étendue aux objets ou attributs féminins (parures, ornements, accessoires) dont l'artiste éprouve le potentiel métaphorique ou symbolique.
Entre petits formats — adaptés à la finesse des détails — et toiles plus monumentales révélant de surprenants changements d'échelle, Charlotte Beaudry stimule le regard du spectateur dans un parcours contrasté comptant une trentaine d'oeuvres, exaltant à la fois la matérialité de la peinture et le caractère insidieux de son imagerie.
Donnant son titre à l'exposition, la récente série "Pussy Bow" présente d'énormes noeuds colorés explosant littéralement sur la toile.
Ce terme sibyllin, désignant une pièce de tissu nouée au col d'un chemisier féminin, peut pourtant se révéler équivoque. L'artiste semble s'en amuser en rehaussant ses grands noeuds d'une ambiguïté manifeste.
Née en 1968 à Huy en Belgique, Charlotte Beaudry vit et travaille à Bruxelles.

De artistieke praktijk van Charlotte Beaudry gaat over schilder– en tekenkunst, hoewel ze ook video's of beeldhouwwerken maakt en performances doet.
Haar werk stelt in de eerste plaats vragen over de link tussen vrouwelijkheid en representatie door de intieme ervaring te confronteren met een sociale of mediagerelateerde context.
Na een periode gewijd aan de figuur en lichamelijkheid van jongeren, volgt nu een iconografie over vrouwelijke objecten of attributen (juwelen, accessoires) waarvan de kunstenares het metaforische of symbolische potentieel onderzoekt.
Tussen kleine formaten — aangepast aan de verfijndheid van de details — en meer monumentale doeken die verrassende veranderingen vertonen qua schaal, stimuleert Charlotte Beaudry de blik van de toeschouwer in een contrasterend parcours dat een dertigtal werken omvat, dat zowel de materialiteit van de schilderkunst bezingt als het verraderlijke karakter van haar beeldtaal.
De recente reeks "Pussy Bow", die haar titel geeft aan de tentoonstelling, stelt enorme gekleurde strikken voor die letterlijk ontploffen op het doek. Deze raadselachtige term, die verwijst naar een stuk stof dat wordt geknoopt rond de hals van een bloes van een vrouw, kan dan ook dubbelzinnig worden opgevat.
De kunstenares lijkt er zich mee te vermaken door die grote strikken nog verder te voorzien van een duidelijke ambiguïteit.
